Thailand Vegetarian Festival 2026: dates, rules & where to eat jay in Bangkok
Every autumn, Thailand turns yellow and red for the Vegetarian Festival — เทศกาลกินเจ, the nine-day Taoist observance honouring the Nine Emperor Gods. In 2026 the festival runs 10–18 October (dates follow the ninth Chinese lunar month and can shift a day by shrine and region, so check locally).
For nine days, observers eat strictly jay (เจ): no meat, fish, dairy or eggs — and also no garlic, onion or other pungent vegetables, which are believed to excite the senses. Food stalls and restaurants serving jay food fly yellow flags with the red เจ character, and whole streets — especially in Chinatown's Yaowarat — become plant-based food fairs.
The festival's heart is Phuket, with its famous processions, but Bangkok celebrates at scale: Yaowarat, Talat Noi and the city's hundreds of jay kitchens go into overdrive. The best part for vegans? Jay food is essentially vegan year-round — the kitchens below serve it every day, not just in October.
